Pakistan Rights Movement (PRM) Chairman Mushtaq Ahmed Khan criticized Jamaat-e-Islami over its financial strength and electoral performance. He described the party as a “wealthy party of the poor” during an interview with Times of Karachi correspondent Khizar Azam.
Moreover, he claimed that Jamaat-e-Islami possesses billions of rupees in resources. He also said the party maintains an extensive nationwide organizational network.
Khan Draws Comparison With Pakistan Muslim League
Mushtaq Ahmed recalled a political phrase commonly used during the 1970s. He said people described the Pakistan Muslim League as a “poor party of the rich.”
According to him, the party included influential landlords and wealthy politicians. However, he claimed those members rarely contributed significant financial support to the organization. Therefore, the phrase reflected the contrast between members’ wealth and the party’s financial condition.
Questions Party’s Electoral Performance
Mushtaq Ahmed argued that Jamaat-e-Islami presents the opposite example in Pakistan’s political landscape. He said the party has established offices across the country. Furthermore, he claimed it enjoys considerable financial and organizational resources.
He questioned why such resources have not translated into stronger electoral results. Additionally, he asked why the party continues to struggle in national and provincial elections despite its nationwide presence.
He suggested that a strong organizational network should produce better political outcomes. However, he maintained that the party has failed to convert its resources into broader public support.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has not publicly responded to his remarks. The comments have drawn attention as political discussions continue over party organization and electoral performance in Pakistan.
