The main suspect in the killing of a 15-year-old orphan in Multan has died in an alleged police encounter near Bahawalpur, Punjab, authorities said on Wednesday. The development follows his reported escape from police custody while facing investigation into the teenager’s death.
Police identified the suspect as Tauqeer Nazir, who was on a four-day physical remand in connection with the killing of Waseem Abbas. Authorities said the Crime Control Department (CCD) encountered him near Bahawalpur’s Northern Bypass.
Police Describe Exchange of Fire
CCD District Officer Irfan Akbar said officers attempted to stop two men travelling on a motorcycle. According to his account, the riders opened fire while trying to escape, triggering an exchange of gunfire.
Akbar said Tauqeer sustained fatal bullet wounds during the incident. Police claimed his accomplice fired the shots that killed him before fleeing the scene. Authorities have launched efforts to trace the second suspect, identified as Amjad, who was also wanted in the murder case.
Police have yet to explain how Tauqeer escaped custody or reached Bahawalpur while on remand.
Teenager Was Allegedly Chased and Run Over
Waseem Abbas, an orphaned teenager, died after a car allegedly struck him in Multan’s Royal Orchard housing society. Police said the boy had been sent to Tauqeer to learn electrical work about a week before the incident.
According to investigators, Waseem attempted to leave his workplace after alleged mistreatment. Police said the suspect chased him in a car and ran him over. CCTV footage reportedly showed the teenager running before the vehicle struck him.
The incident sparked public outrage and calls for justice. Police had arrested Tauqeer and registered a murder case before his reported escape and death.
Authorities must now establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged encounter, custody escape and the whereabouts of the remaining suspect.
