At least one person died and 11 others remained missing after a mudslide struck a village in eastern China’s Jiangxi province early Saturday, according to Xinhua news agency.
The mudslide hit a village in Ji’an city following days of torrential rain linked to Typhoon Saudel. China’s flood control and drought relief headquarters said rescue teams were working to locate those still missing.
One person recovered from the site was found dead, while rescuers pulled two others out alive. The two survivors remained in stable condition, according to the report.
Rescue Teams Continue Search Operations
Search and rescue operations continued as authorities relocated affected residents and implemented measures to prevent secondary disasters. Emergency teams remained deployed in the area as heavy rainfall increased risks for nearby communities.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Saudel also brought torrential rain and flooding to southern coastal provinces, including Fujian and Guangdong. Severe downpours flooded urban and rural areas, submerged vehicles and caused a three-storey brick building to collapse.
Flooding Hits Fujian Communities
In Fuding, a city known for its tea plantations and greenery, firefighters waded through waist-deep floodwaters to rescue elderly residents. Verified social media footage showed emergency personnel carrying people to safety amid widespread flooding.
In nearby Jinxi village, a mountain-surrounded tea-growing community, powerful floodwaters inundated residential buildings and caused a three-storey house to collapse. The flooding underscored the dangers created by the typhoon’s heavy rainfall.
Authorities have shut schools, suspended public transport and activated emergency flood protocols across several coastal areas. Consequently, residents in vulnerable locations face continued disruption as officials monitor rainfall, flooding and the risk of further landslides.
The latest disaster highlights the growing impact of extreme weather across affected parts of China as emergency services continue rescue and relief efforts.
