The Senate Standing Committee on Communications has reportedly directed the Motorway Police to stop checking citizens’ marriage certificates. The instruction came during a committee meeting held on Wednesday.
The meeting, chaired by Senator Pervaiz Rashid, reviewed matters related to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP). Committee members discussed several issues concerning the department’s operations.
Senator Pervaiz Rashid expressed concern over reports that officers were checking marriage certificates. He questioned the authority under which such checks were being conducted.
Committee Reviews NHMP Practices and Procedures
During the session, Senator Saifullah Abro raised objections to an NHMP handout. He sought clarification regarding the inclusion of senators’ names in the document.
Furthermore, Abro questioned how the Motorway Police had linked recovered items to specific senators. He asked officials to explain the basis for those conclusions.
Responding to the committee, the Inspector General of the Motorway Police outlined the department’s role. He said the NHMP is responsible for taking legal action where necessary.
The official added that the department should not comment on individuals or institutions. He stressed that its duties remain limited to law enforcement responsibilities.
Chairman Calls for Protection of Public Trust
Senator Pervaiz Rashid said the Motorway Police enjoys a strong public reputation. Therefore, he emphasised the importance of maintaining public confidence in the institution.
Referring again to reports of marriage certificate checks, he expressed concern over the practice. He asked officials to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.
“The Motorway Police is a responsible institution,” Rashid stated during the meeting. He directed officials to make sure no citizen’s marriage certificate is checked going forward.
The committee concluded its discussion after reviewing the concerns raised by lawmakers. Further recommendations may follow as oversight of NHMP operations continues.
