ITS system helps officers intercept car with alleged fake registration plate
RAHIM YAR KHAN: Motorway Police seized a suspected non-customs paid (NCP) Daihatsu Mira valued at approximately Rs3 million during an operation on the M-5 Motorway after the vehicle was flagged by the Intelligent Transport System (ITS), officials said.
According to Motorway Police Central Region spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed, the ITS identified the vehicle for a reported seatbelt violation near Head Malkani, close to Zahir Pir. Officers immediately intercepted the car and carried out a routine inspection.
During the check, the driver, identified as Shayan Ahmed Tareen, a resident of Quetta, was unable to produce ownership documents or other legal papers for the vehicle. Officials also found that the registration number plate displayed on the car was allegedly fake.
Customs officials verify vehicle status
Following the initial inspection, Motorway Police called customs officials to the scene for further verification. After examining the vehicle, customs authorities declared it a non-customs paid (NCP) vehicle, according to the police spokesperson.
The Motorway Police subsequently handed over both the vehicle and the driver to customs officials, who will proceed with further legal action in accordance with the law.
Authorities did not immediately disclose whether any criminal charges had been formally filed or whether additional investigations were underway.
Technology strengthens highway enforcement
Motorway Police said the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of the Intelligent Transport System in identifying suspected violations and assisting officers in enforcing traffic and customs laws.
Officials added that the force continues to conduct operations against individuals involved in traffic offences and other suspected illegal activities on national highways and motorways by combining modern surveillance technology with field enforcement.
The department reiterated its commitment to improving road safety and supporting other law enforcement agencies in preventing the movement of illegally documented vehicles. It also urged motorists to ensure they carry valid ownership and registration documents while travelling and to comply with all traffic regulations to avoid legal action.
