Motorway Police have foiled an attempt to smuggle 38 tons of wheat from Chichawatni to Karachi, recovering the consignment during an operation near Multan. Authorities valued the seized wheat at approximately Rs 3.3 million.
The operation highlights continued efforts to prevent the illegal transportation of agricultural commodities across Pakistan. Moreover, the recovery has drawn attention to the enforcement measures authorities use to regulate wheat transportation and protect the country’s food supply.
Police Intercept Suspicious Trailer Near Multan
According to a Motorway Police spokesperson, officers intercepted a suspicious trailer bearing registration number TLD-610 near Multan. The vehicle was travelling from Chichawatni towards Karachi when police stopped it for inspection.
During a detailed search, officers discovered 38 tons of wheat inside the trailer. The initial investigation indicated that the consignment was being transported towards Karachi through an allegedly illegal arrangement.
The recovered wheat carries an estimated market value of Rs 3.3 million. However, authorities have not disclosed further details about the individuals or network allegedly involved in the attempted smuggling.
The interception prevented the consignment from reaching its intended destination before officials could verify its transportation. Consequently, the operation represents another enforcement action against the unauthorised movement of agricultural commodities.
Food Department Receives Wheat and Driver
Following the recovery, Motorway Police handed the trailer’s driver over to the Punjab Food Department for further action. The department will handle the case according to the applicable regulations governing wheat transportation and related violations.
Meanwhile, the seizure highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and food authorities. Such coordination helps officials investigate suspicious shipments and determine whether transporters have violated applicable rules.
Authorities may examine the consignment’s origin, transportation documents and intended destination as part of the investigation. Nevertheless, officials have not announced any additional arrests or confirmed further legal developments in the case.
The incident underscores the role of motorway surveillance in identifying suspicious vehicles and disrupting potential smuggling attempts. Authorities continue monitoring transport routes to enforce regulations and protect agricultural supplies.
