Amid the chaos of the mass breakout from Karachi’s Malir Jail, a moment of extraordinary moral courage emerged when a mother voluntarily returned her escaped son to prison and handed him over to authorities.
According to reports, the inmate had fled the facility during Monday night’s disorder and returned home shortly afterward. Upon seeing him, his mother urged him to take responsibility and escorted him back to Malir Jail, surrendering him to police under full supervision.
In an emotional scene outside the jail, the mother pleaded with police officers for leniency. Witnesses said she stood with folded hands, saying, “My son made a mistake, but I brought him back myself. Please don’t harm him.”
The act struck a chord as law enforcement continued efforts to track down escapees from the mass jailbreak.
Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon told ARY News that a total of 213 inmates had escaped during the unrest. Of these, 78 have been rearrested, while approximately 135 remain at large.
He clarified that the prisoners did not break the prison walls to escape, but rather exited through the main gate during the disorder. The IG added that those who voluntarily surrender will be shown leniency, while those caught during raids will face full legal consequences.
