NDMA reports widespread damage to homes, roads and infrastructure across the country
ISLAMABAD: At least eight people lost their lives and 16 others sustained injuries in rain-related incidents across Pakistan during the past 24 hours, raising the nationwide death toll from the ongoing monsoon season to 57, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
In its latest situation report, the NDMA said a total of 148 people have been injured in rain and flood-related incidents since the current monsoon spell began on June 26.
According to the authority, the fatalities include 22 children, 18 men and 17 women. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded the highest number of deaths with 35, followed by Punjab with 10, Azad Jammu and Kashmir with seven, and Balochistan with five.
Meanwhile, Punjab reported the highest number of injuries at 72, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 61, Balochistan with 13 and Azad Kashmir with two.
Infrastructure suffers extensive damage
The NDMA said heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides have caused widespread destruction in several parts of the country. So far, 270 houses have been damaged, while 189 livestock have perished in flood-related incidents.
Additionally, around 4.5 kilometres of roads have been damaged, disrupting transportation and limiting access to affected communities.
The authority noted that the latest casualties were reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Azad Kashmir.
Authorities urge public vigilance
The NDMA said its National Emergencies Operation Centre continues to monitor the evolving weather situation while coordinating with provincial disaster management authorities to support rescue and relief efforts.
Furthermore, the authority urged provincial administrations and residents to remain alert, particularly in areas vulnerable to flash floods, urban flooding, landslides and glacial lake outburst floods.
Officials also advised the public to follow weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel in affected regions and cooperate with emergency responders to minimise risks during the ongoing monsoon season as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the country.
