ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to suspend 3G and 4G services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The directive, issued on October 9, stated that the suspension would begin at midnight and remain in effect until further orders.
Official Notification Issued to PTA
The ministry’s letter, addressed to the PTA chairman, confirmed approval for the suspension of mobile internet in both cities. The PTA was instructed to coordinate with the Islamabad commissioner, police chief, and Rawalpindi regional police officer to ensure implementation.
No Official Reason Disclosed
The ministry did not cite a specific reason for the disruption of mobile data services. However, the suspension coincides with Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan’s (TLP) announced march toward the US Embassy scheduled for today.
TLP March and Rising Tensions
On Thursday, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry stated that the government supports peaceful protests but noted that TLP had not sought official permission for its demonstration in the capital. Authorities have taken precautionary measures to maintain law and order amid growing tensions.
Violence Erupts in Punjab
Late Thursday night, violence broke out in parts of Punjab after police launched a crackdown on TLP’s headquarters to arrest its chief, Saad Rizvi. The clashes left several people injured, including around a dozen police officers. Security has been tightened in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to prevent further unrest.
