American billionaire Michael Dell has overtaken Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg to become the world’s fifth-richest person following a rebound in technology stocks, according to estimates published on Monday.
Dell’s net worth increased by approximately $4.3 billion to $241.3 billion as shares of Dell Technologies climbed around 2 per cent. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg’s fortune declined to approximately $240.7 billion after Meta shares fell about 1.1 per cent. The difference placed Dell roughly $600 million ahead of Zuckerberg in the global wealth rankings.
The shift followed a turbulent week for technology stocks, as investors expressed concerns about heavy spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and the sustainability of recent market gains.
Dell Technologies has benefited from growing demand for servers, storage equipment and other hardware used to power artificial intelligence systems and data centres. The company, founded by Dell in the 1980s, has expanded beyond its traditional personal computer business to become a major supplier of AI infrastructure.
Dell’s fortune has increased substantially this year as investors have driven up the company’s share price. His estimated wealth stood at around $141 billion earlier in the year, before rising sharply during the technology stock rally.
However, his position among the world’s wealthiest individuals has fluctuated considerably in recent weeks. He briefly reached second place in September before a market downturn reduced his fortune by billions of dollars.
Investors are now monitoring technology companies’ earnings and AI investments for signs of whether the sector’s rapid growth can continue.
The rankings remain subject to daily changes because billionaire fortunes are closely linked to stock market movements.
