Amber alert covers London, Midlands and eastern England as authorities warn of health, transport and infrastructure disruption
LONDON: The Met Office has issued an amber extreme heat warning for large parts of England on Thursday, with temperatures potentially reaching 38°C in some areas.
The warning will remain in force from 9am until midnight and covers London, St Albans, Cambridge, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Leicester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Lincoln and Sheffield, among other locations.
Forecasters expect particularly intense heat across eastern and southeastern England and the Midlands following a warm night. Moreover, temperatures could climb to between 37°C and 38°C in the hottest locations.
The Met Office warned that prolonged heat could cause adverse health effects, particularly among people who are vulnerable to high temperatures.
Transport and Power Systems Face Disruption Risk
Meanwhile, authorities warned that the heat could disrupt transport networks and place additional pressure on infrastructure.
Heat-sensitive equipment and systems could also fail during the hottest period, potentially causing power outages at some homes and businesses.
Furthermore, travel delays could develop as roads, railways and other infrastructure face unusually high temperatures.
The warning comes as England prepares for another period of exceptionally hot summer weather, increasing concerns about public health and essential services.
Public Urged to Avoid Strongest Afternoon Heat
The Met Office has advised people to take precautions throughout Thursday, particularly during the hottest part of the day.
People should drink plenty of water and remain out of direct sunlight wherever possible. Those who need to go outdoors should use sunscreen and take regular breaks in shaded or cooler areas.
In addition, authorities advise against strenuous exercise between 11am and 3pm, when sunlight remains strongest.
Residents can also reduce indoor temperatures by closing curtains or blinds in rooms exposed directly to sunlight.
Officials urged vulnerable people to take additional precautions as temperatures rise.
