At 14 years and 69 days old, an extraordinary Easter Egger chicken named Pearl has officially been recognised as the world’s oldest living chicken, capturing the hearts of animal lovers worldwide.
A Remarkable Journey from Hatch to Record Holder
Pearl was hatched on March 13, 2011, in a home incubator by her devoted owner, Sonya Hill. While Easter Egger chickens typically live between five and eight years, Pearl has nearly doubled that lifespan, proving she’s anything but ordinary.
According to her owner, Pearl enjoys a peaceful life indoors. Though age has slowed her movements, she still makes her way into the living room whenever the television is on — as if ready to enjoy her favourite shows.
A Cozy Home Filled with Companionship
Pearl isn’t alone in her golden years. She shares her home with an elderly cat and a playful newborn kitten. Hill says the kitten often curls up next to Pearl, a gesture of warmth and friendship that the chicken seems to appreciate.
Despite her impressive age, Pearl continues to surprise her owner by laying the occasional egg — including one just after receiving her official world record certificate.
How Pearl’s Record Compares
While Pearl holds the current Guinness World Record for the oldest living chicken, the all-time title still belongs to Peanut from Illinois, who lived to 21 years and 238 days before passing away in December 2023. Pearl may not have surpassed that milestone yet, but her current achievement has secured her a special place in history.
More Than Just a Record
For Hill, Pearl’s longevity is not just about breaking records. It’s a story of care, love, and resilience. “She’s been with me through so much. She’s family,” Hill shared, reflecting on their deep bond.
Pearl’s gentle personality and exceptional lifespan make her an inspiration to pet owners everywhere, proving that attentive care, a safe environment, and affection can contribute to extraordinary longevity in animals.
The Legacy of Pearl
Pearl’s story continues to inspire poultry enthusiasts and pet lovers alike. She stands as a feathered reminder that with love, patience, and a little luck, even the most ordinary creatures can achieve extraordinary milestones.
