McDonald’s and KFC have ranked among the world’s least healthy fast food chains in a new nutrition report. Moreover, the study assessed leading restaurant brands based on the nutritional quality of their menu items.
Report Highlights High-Calorie Fast Food Choices
The WorldAtlas report, shared by Yahoo Finance, listed KFC, McDonald’s, Smashburger, Little Caesars and Chick-fil-A among the least healthy chains. Furthermore, researchers evaluated signature menu items for calories, sodium and saturated fat.
The report also considered the promotion of oversized meal combinations across restaurant menus. According to the findings, many popular meals exceed recommended calorie and sodium limits for a single serving.
Burger King also featured in the report because of ingredients used in several menu items. Researchers noted that some burger buns contain potassium iodate, a flour treatment agent restricted in certain countries.
Additionally, the report highlighted the presence of mono- and diglycerides in some products. It also identified dimethylpolysiloxane in frying oils and silicon dioxide in selected menu ingredients.
Experts Warn About Frequent Fast Food Consumption
According to the report, regularly eating highly processed fast food may increase several health risks. Consequently, frequent consumption has been linked to obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease.
Researchers also pointed to the widespread use of ultra-processed ingredients across many fast food products. These include refined seed oils, added sugars, preservatives, emulsifiers and other food additives.
The report stated that manufacturers often use these ingredients to improve flavour and extend shelf life. However, it encouraged consumers to make informed dietary choices and limit excessive consumption of highly processed meals.
