France Break Paraguayโs Resistance in Philadelphia
France booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Kylian Mbappe scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. His strike finally broke Paraguayโs stubborn defensive resistance.
The match was played in extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius. A crowd of 68,324 watched the tense contest at Lincoln Financial Field.
France dominated possession for most of the game. However, Paraguay made it difficult for the French attack to find space.
The South American side defended deep, used a back five, and tried to frustrate Franceโs star players. Their approach worked for long periods, but France eventually found a way through.
Mbappe Moves Level With Messi in Golden Boot Race
Mbappe continued his outstanding World Cup form with another crucial goal.
The Real Madrid forward now has seven goals in the tournament. He has moved level with Lionel Messi as the joint-top scorer of the competition.
Mbappe also reached 19 career World Cup goals in just 19 appearances. He is now only one goal behind Messiโs overall World Cup tally of 20.
France did not produce the attacking brilliance seen in earlier matches. Still, they showed patience and control.
Their breakthrough came after substitute Desire Doue was brought down by Diego Gomez inside the penalty area. The referee awarded the spot-kick after a review.
Ousmane Dembele protected the penalty spot as Paraguay players tried to disturb the surface. Mbappe then stepped forward and scored calmly.
Morocco Await France in Quarter-Final Clash
France will now face Morocco in the quarter-finals.
Morocco reached the last eight after beating Canada 3-0 earlier in the day.
Didier Deschamps and his team will return to their Boston base before preparing for the next match in Foxborough.
Paraguay had entered the match with confidence after eliminating Germany on penalties in the previous round. They hoped to create another major upset against France.
However, their defensive plan could not survive the full match.
Paraguay failed to register a shot on target until the 90th minute. France remained in control despite their limited clear chances.
Mbappe almost scored again in stoppage time, but one goal was enough to send France forward.
The win was not stylish, but it was effective. France have now taken another important step toward their World Cup ambitions.
