ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has hinted at launching a street agitation against the government, accusing it of undermining democracy and exploiting the country’s natural resources.
Addressing a party workers’ convention in Mansehra on Tuesday, Fazl said his party would not allow the government to deprive people of their democratic rights or exploit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s natural resources.
He urged party workers to remain united and prepare for a political struggle against what he described as anti-people government policies.
Fazl claimed that JUI-F was the only political force actively challenging government policies inside and outside parliament. He also criticised successive governments for failing to control militancy despite conducting 13 security operations since 2010 and receiving billions of dollars for counterterrorism efforts.
He maintained that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s natural resources belonged to its indigenous communities and rejected attempts to exploit them in the name of fighting terrorism.
Meanwhile, JUI-F provincial chief Maulana Attaur Rahman opposed any reversal of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas’ (FATA) status without consulting local tribes.
Former Pakistan Peoples Party leader Malik Waheed also announced his decision to join JUI-F during the convention.
Fazl has not announced a specific date or schedule for the proposed street agitation.
