A ninth-grade student in Peshawar received 72 marks in Biology after the Peshawar High Court directed a review of his answer sheet. The student had initially received zero marks, raising concerns about examination marking and the process for addressing complaints.
According to his lawyer, Abdul Aziz’s family approached the court after their request for rechecking failed to resolve the issue.
Court Intervention Leads to Revised Result
Aziz’s father, advocate Arif Khan, filed the case through lawyer Amin Yousafzai. The family challenged the original result after the student received zero marks in Biology.
Yousafzai said board officials initially insisted that the result was correct and that the marks would remain unchanged. However, the board awarded Aziz 72 marks after examining his answer sheet on the court’s directions.
The sharp change raised questions about how the original result was prepared and why the initial complaint did not resolve the matter.
Lawyers Raise Concerns Over Rechecking System
Yousafzai questioned the effectiveness of the board’s complaint-handling process. He argued that students without financial resources or legal awareness might struggle to challenge similar errors.
He also said the family had hesitated to publicise the case because they feared possible unfair treatment during the student’s tenth-grade examination.
The incident highlights the importance of accessible and transparent procedures for students who believe their examination results contain errors.
Educationists Call for Stronger Checks
Educationist and lecturer Shah Nawaz Khan called for stronger internal checks to identify marking, tabulation and result-compilation mistakes before authorities announce results.
He said a change from zero to 72 marks warranted a serious review of the board’s examination procedures.
The board chairman reportedly did not respond to repeated calls seeking comment. The available report also does not explain the exact cause of the discrepancy.
Case Raises Questions About Examination Transparency
The incident has renewed concerns about the reliability of examination results and the safeguards available to students.
Accurate marking is essential because board results can influence students’ academic progress and future opportunities. Stronger review mechanisms could help detect errors earlier and reduce the need for families to seek judicial intervention.
