LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has said that women account for more than 60% of beneficiaries of the provincial government’s laptop scheme, electric bike programme and scholarship initiatives, highlighting her administration’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
Addressing a ceremony in Lahore, Maryam said her government was expanding educational and economic opportunities for women through various public welfare programmes.
She explained that she decided to provide laptops to students after learning about their demand for digital learning facilities. She also questioned the need to treat women as a separate segment when they constitute approximately 51% of the country’s population.
Consequently, she said, her government abolished the separate quota and continued implementing initiatives based on broader access and eligibility criteria.
Maryam noted that women had emerged as the majority of recipients across several programmes, including electric bikes, Honhaar Scholarships and laptop distribution schemes.
The chief minister expressed satisfaction that students attending the ceremony had received laptops and scholarships without political recommendations or personal connections.
She stressed that students’ political affiliations and personal backgrounds had never influenced her approach to distributing educational assistance.
“Every son of Punjab is Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s son, and every daughter of Punjab is Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s daughter,” she said, reaffirming her commitment to serving young people across the province.
Maryam added that empowering women through education, technology and mobility remained an important priority for her administration.
Her remarks underscored the government’s stated aim of improving access to educational resources and creating opportunities for women throughout Punjab.
