Marc Marquez moved closer to an eighth MotoGP world championship after winning the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Ducati rider delivered a dominant performance at Sepang to secure his seventh victory of the 2026 season.
Marquez completed the race in 40 minutes and 14.236 seconds. He finished 4.172 seconds ahead of Red Bull KTM rider Pedro Acosta, while his younger brother Alex Marquez claimed third place.
Marquez Extends Championship Lead
The 33-year-old Spaniard now holds a 44-point advantage over his closest rival, Jorge Martin. Martin missed the Malaysian race after suffering a broken wrist.
Marquez took the lead shortly after the start, passing pole-sitter Alex Marquez at the first corner. Although the brothers briefly exchanged positions, Marc regained control and gradually increased his advantage.
Meanwhile, Acosta maintained pressure on the Marquez brothers during the opening laps. The KTM rider eventually overtook Alex on Lap 10 to secure second place.
Marquez continued building his lead and crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of his competitors. The victory also marked his 80th premier-class win and third MotoGP triumph in Malaysia.
Qatar Could Decide the Championship
The Malaysian victory puts Marquez in a strong position ahead of next weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix. He could secure his eighth MotoGP championship there, depending on the results.
However, Marquez remained cautious about declaring the title race over. He said his focus remained on maintaining consistency and pushing through the remaining races.
After Qatar, only two race weekends will remain in the 2026 season. Marquez’s latest victory has therefore brought him significantly closer to another historic championship achievement.
