US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has rejected reports suggesting he plans to leave President Donald Trump’s administration to pursue a potential presidential campaign in 2028.
Rubio clarified that he intends to remain in the administration until Trump completes his presidential term. Speaking to The New York Times on Thursday, he said serving the president until the end of his tenure had always been his plan.
The clarification followed reports by Bloomberg News claiming Rubio was considering stepping down. The report also suggested that he had discussed his possible departure with White House officials, who reportedly encouraged him to stay.
However, Rubio dismissed the speculation, while State Department Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson described the Bloomberg report as completely fabricated.
Johnson also rejected claims by The Independent that Rubio was preparing to launch a campaign for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.
Rubio, who additionally serves as Trump’s national security adviser, is widely viewed as a potential Republican contender in the next presidential election.
Nevertheless, he declined to discuss his political ambitions, saying he would no longer talk about 2028.
He has previously expressed support for Vice President JD Vance if Vance decides to seek the Republican presidential nomination.
Meanwhile, speculation about the party’s future leadership continues following Republican losses in the recent midterm elections.
