Hospital Ward
BAHAWALPUR: In a tragic turn of events, a man accused of murdering his sister-in-law and injuring his wife reportedly died after escaping from police custody and jumping off the roof of Nishtar Hospital’s emergency ward in Multan.
According to police sources, the suspect, identified as Waseem, was involved in a violent domestic dispute in Qasim Bela, under the jurisdiction of Cantt Police Station. The altercation escalated to a fatal level when Waseem allegedly killed his sister-in-law. He then turned on his wife, severely injuring her, before attempting to end his own life.
Following the incident, Waseem was taken into custody by the police and shifted to Nishtar Hospital in critical condition for treatment. However, during his stay at the hospital, a severe windstorm struck the city, causing a widespread power outage.
In the confusion and apparent lack of vigilance, Waseem managed to escape from the custody of the police officers assigned to guard him.
Later at dawn, police personnel discovered Waseem’s lifeless body in an empty plot within the hospital premises. Initial investigations suggest that in a bid to flee the facility, he climbed onto the roof of the hospital ward and leapt off, resulting in his death.
The circumstances of his escape and subsequent death have raised serious concerns regarding security lapses and negligence on the part of law enforcement.
In response to the incident, senior police officials have taken disciplinary action against the personnel responsible for guarding the suspect. Three officers, including Inspector Arshad, Sub-Inspector Asghar, and a constable, have been suspended pending further inquiry.
Authorities have assured a thorough investigation to determine how Waseem was able to escape from custody despite being under police supervision in a hospital setting.
The incident has sparked debate over the treatment and security of detainees receiving medical care, particularly during emergencies when regular procedures may be compromised.
