Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will arrive in Pakistan on October 20 for a visit expected to strengthen diplomatic, economic and regional cooperation. His stay will continue until the night of October 22, marking the first visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in more than a decade.
A high-level delegation, including several Maldivian ministers, will accompany Muizzu during the visit. The programme includes meetings with Pakistan’s top leadership and discussions on expanding cooperation across several sectors.
Shehbaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari to Meet Maldivian President
During his stay in Islamabad, President Muizzu is expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting will be followed by delegation-level talks between Pakistan and the Maldives.
President Asif Ali Zardari is also scheduled to meet his Maldivian counterpart. These engagements are expected to provide an opportunity to review bilateral relations and explore areas for closer collaboration.
The discussions will also cover regional developments and the revival of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). In addition, both sides are expected to consider ways to strengthen cooperation through the United Nations (UN), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and SAARC.
Pakistan and Maldives Expected to Sign Around a Dozen Agreements
Pakistan and the Maldives are expected to sign around a dozen agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) during the visit. The proposed arrangements will cover several areas of mutual interest, including health, education, trade and technology.
One expected MoU will focus on cooperation in the health sector. Another aims to strengthen links between the academic communities of both countries, creating opportunities for closer educational engagement.
The proposed agreements are also expected to address finance, parliamentary exchanges, high-level visits, tourism, climate change and media cooperation. Furthermore, enhanced defence cooperation remains among the areas under consideration.
Direct Flights and Trade Ties Among Key Priorities
The planned visit could also advance travel and commercial links between Pakistan and the Maldives. Both countries are expected to consider an agreement on launching direct flights between them.
Improved air connectivity could support tourism and facilitate travel between the two countries. Meanwhile, discussions on trade and economic cooperation are expected to explore opportunities for stronger commercial engagement.
The proposed arrangements reflect the broad agenda for the presidential visit. However, the agreements remain expected outcomes, and their finalisation will depend on the discussions and formal proceedings.
Last Maldivian Presidential Visit Took Place in 2015
The upcoming visit carries diplomatic significance because the last visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan took place in May 2015. At that time, then-President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom visited the country.
Muizzu’s visit therefore marks the first such presidential trip in more than a decade. With meetings planned at the highest political level, both countries are expected to discuss ways to deepen bilateral relations and expand cooperation on regional and international platforms.
The visit will also provide an opportunity to advance proposed agreements covering economic, educational, health and other areas. Its outcomes could help shape the next phase of Pakistan-Maldives relations.
