Pakistanโs security forces carried out a major counterterrorism operation in Balochistanโs Barkhan district, where seven militants were killed during a fierce exchange of fire. However, the operation also resulted in the martyrdom of five brave security personnel, including an army major, according to a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations.
The military operation took place in the Nosham area of Barkhan on May 13. Officials said the mission was launched after intelligence reports regarding the presence of militants operating in the region.
According to the militaryโs media wing, personnel from the Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps Balochistan jointly conducted the sanitisation operation to clear the area of armed militants.
Security officials stated that the militants belonged to what the military described as India-backed militant networks operating inside Pakistan.
The operation quickly turned into an intense firefight after troops located the armed group hiding in the mountainous region.
Fierce Gun Battle Leaves Major and Soldiers Martyred
During the operation, security forces engaged the militants in a heavy exchange of gunfire. Officials confirmed that seven militants were neutralised during the encounter.
Security personnel also recovered weapons, ammunition, and explosives from the militants killed during the operation.
However, the clash proved costly for Pakistanโs armed forces. Five soldiers embraced martyrdom while fighting during the operation.
The military identified the martyred officer as Major Tauseef Ahmed Bhatti, aged 31, who belonged to Pakpattan district.
The other martyred personnel included:
- Naik Fida Hussain, aged 36, from Sukkur
- Sepoy Zakir Hussain, aged 32, from Skardu
- Sepoy Suhail Ahmed, aged 21, from Khanewal
- Sepoy Muhammad Ayaz, aged 24, from Rahim Yar Khan
The military praised the courage and sacrifice of the fallen soldiers. Officials said the personnel fought bravely during the operation and prevented militants from escaping the area.
The loss of the army officer and soldiers triggered grief across different parts of the country as tributes poured in for the martyrs.
Security officials described the fallen personnel as national heroes who sacrificed their lives while defending Pakistan against terrorism.
Security Forces Continue Sweeping Operation in Barkhan
According to the ISPR, the sanitisation operation remains ongoing in the area. Troops continue searching nearby locations to eliminate any remaining militants hiding in the region.
The military reiterated its commitment to continuing counterterrorism operations across the country under the national security campaign known as Azm-e-Istehkam.
Officials stated that the operation aims to completely dismantle militant networks and restore peace in affected regions.
The military also emphasized that foreign-sponsored terrorism remains a serious threat to national security.
Pakistan has witnessed a rise in militant attacks in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent years. Many attacks have targeted civilians, security personnel, and infrastructure projects.
Security officials believe cross-border militant networks continue exploiting regional instability to launch attacks inside Pakistan.
Rising Regional Tensions Continue Fueling Security Challenges
Pakistan has repeatedly expressed concerns about militant groups operating near the Afghan border since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Islamabad has consistently urged Afghan authorities to prevent militant organizations from using Afghan territory for attacks against Pakistan.
However, Pakistani officials have repeatedly claimed that insufficient action has been taken against armed groups involved in cross-border violence.
The security situation further deteriorated after several deadly incidents occurred near border regions over the past year.
Earlier this year, Pakistan launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq following continued tensions and violent clashes along border areas.
Although diplomatic talks between Pakistan and Afghan authorities continued, officials from both sides have struggled to reach lasting security agreements.
Security analysts say militant violence remains one of the biggest national security challenges facing Pakistan today.
Military officials insist that operations against terrorism will continue without interruption until militant threats are fully eliminated.
The latest operation in Barkhan once again highlights the ongoing sacrifices made by Pakistanโs security forces in the fight against militancy and armed extremism.
