Polish Qualifier Reaches First Grand Slam Semifinal
Maja Chwalinska continued her remarkable French Open journey with a stunning quarterfinal victory over Anna Kalinskaya at Roland Garros.
The Polish qualifier, ranked world No. 114, defeated the 22nd seed 7-6(3), 6-3 on Wednesday. The result sent her into the semifinals and added another major upset to an already dramatic womenโs draw.
Chwalinska entered the tournament with limited success at tour level on clay. Before this run, she had only two tour-level wins on the surface. But in Paris, her game has taken a major turn.
She has shown confidence, patience and strong court control. Her victory over Kalinskaya proved that her run is no longer just a surprise. It is now one of the biggest stories of the French Open.
Chwalinska Keeps Calm Under Pressure
The first set tested Chwalinskaโs nerves. Kalinskaya fought hard and pushed the opener into a tiebreak. But the Polish player stayed composed when it mattered most.
She controlled the tiebreak and won it 7-3. That gave her the momentum she needed.
In the second set, Chwalinska played with more freedom. She moved well, returned with discipline and forced Kalinskaya into difficult positions. Her 6-3 second-set win sealed a career-changing victory.
After the match, Chwalinska said she was still trying to understand the scale of her achievement.
โI honestly donโt know whatโs going on,โ she said. โEvery single match here is kind of crazy for me, so Iโm very grateful.โ
When asked about her calm body language on court, she admitted she was nervous.
โIโm happy it looks like that, but I was definitely nervous,โ she said. โItโs normal. I care.โ
Shnaider Awaits in Semifinal Clash
Chwalinska will now face Diana Shnaider in the French Open semifinals. Shnaider also produced a major upset by defeating top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
The semifinal will be a huge test for Chwalinska. It will also be the biggest match of her career so far.
Her rise from qualifier to semifinalist has inspired tennis fans across the world. She has shown that belief, discipline and courage can change a playerโs entire tournament.
For Chwalinska, the mission remains simple.
โI just try to win every match that Iโm playing,โ she said.
