Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and French President Emmanuel Macron have discussed expanding economic, investment and defence cooperation as both countries seek to strengthen their strategic partnership.
The leaders held talks at Lusail Palace in Doha, according to a statement from Qatar’s Amiri Diwan. Their discussions covered bilateral relations, security cooperation and key regional developments.
Leaders Seek to Expand Strategic Partnership
Sheikh Tamim welcomed Macron’s visit and described it as a reflection of the strong relationship between Qatar and France. He also expressed hope for closer cooperation across various sectors.
Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening ties with Qatar, the official statement said.
Before the formal talks, the two leaders held a preliminary meeting to review bilateral relations and discuss developments across the wider region.
The discussions highlighted both countries’ interest in expanding cooperation beyond existing diplomatic and economic links.
Macron’s Gulf Tour Focuses on Economic Ties
Macron arrived in Doha from Bahrain as part of a wider Gulf tour that also included Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The French presidency said the October 19–21 visit aims to strengthen strategic and economic partnerships with Gulf countries. It also seeks to support multilateral efforts to restore regional stability and protect freedom of navigation.
The tour comes as regional tensions continue to affect trade routes and energy supplies.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions Shape Regional Talks
The diplomatic engagement takes place amid heightened instability following the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region, while disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz affected a critical route for global energy trade. The waterway remains strategically important because of its role in transporting oil and liquefied natural gas to international markets.
Against this backdrop, France and Qatar have an interest in strengthening economic coordination and supporting regional stability. However, the leaders’ public statements did not announce a new agreement or specific investment commitments.
Their meeting forms part of broader diplomatic efforts to reinforce partnerships and address shared security and economic concerns across the Gulf.
