ISLAMABAD: The federal government has ordered immediate action against suspected liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) hoarding as prices surge ahead of winter.
Authorities fear that deliberate supply restrictions could create artificial shortages and increase financial pressure on consumers.
The Petroleum Division raised concerns after reports revealed that LPG cylinders were selling for nearly Rs5,000, compared with the official price of Rs3,296 for an 11.8-kilogram domestic cylinder.
The increase represents a major burden for households, particularly those relying on LPG for cooking and heating.
Officials reported irregularities in the movement of imported LPG from terminals. Despite sufficient imports to meet domestic demand, shipments were reportedly not being collected regularly.
The government suspects these delays may be contributing to artificial shortages and higher market prices.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has been asked to coordinate with provincial administrations and federal agencies to ensure uninterrupted LPG supplies.
Authorities have also been instructed to enforce official prices and prevent suspected hoarding.
The Petroleum Division emphasized that remote, mountainous, and off-grid communities require special attention because they depend heavily on LPG.
Meanwhile, the government is pursuing reforms to improve transparency in the domestic LPG market.
A proposed competitive distribution mechanism aims to prevent market concentration and ensure fair access for suppliers.
However, ongoing legal disputes have delayed implementation of these reforms.
Officials maintained that legal options remain available to address existing obstacles.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers, improving market competition, and maintaining reliable LPG supplies.
The latest intervention comes as winter approaches, increasing concerns about potential fuel shortages and further price increases across Pakistan.
