LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Aalia Neelum on Wednesday summoned Punjab Inspector General Rao Abdul Kareem in person while hearing a contempt petition involving personnel of Chung police.
Citizen Mian Muhammad Jamil filed the petition, while Superintendent of Police Abdullah appeared before the court representing Chung police.
Petitioner’s counsel Advocate Shahbaz Bhatti told the court that an LHC single bench had suspended a 2021 sessions court order directing registration of an FIR against his client. However, he alleged that police subsequently registered a case despite the suspension order.
Chief Justice Questions Readability of Police FIR
During proceedings, Justice Neelum asked SP Abdullah to read the FIR aloud, but he could not properly narrate its contents.
The chief justice questioned why the document was difficult to read and expressed displeasure over how police had written the complaint.
Justice Neelum remarked that the problem extended across Punjab and criticised the poor readability of FIRs. She also sarcastically compared the writing to “flies”, saying even flies appeared larger.
Consequently, the chief justice summoned IG Kareem with the relevant record for Thursday.
Punjab IG Also Summoned in Separate Contempt Matter
Meanwhile, Justice Neelum summoned the Punjab police chief for Thursday in another contempt case after rejecting an inquiry report concerning the Lahore capital city police officer.
Citizen Momin Khan filed the second petition, alleging that police personnel continued harassing him despite earlier court directions.
His lawyer told the court that a previous petition concerning alleged police harassment had been referred to the CCPO for redressal.
However, the counsel claimed police officials continued their alleged conduct and failed to comply with the court’s directions.
Therefore, he asked the LHC to initiate contempt proceedings against the CCPO over the alleged non-compliance with its previous orders.
