A Lexington woman won $50,000 after picking Powerball numbers from a fortune cookie, according to lottery officials.
Kathy Bailey had just enjoyed Chinese food with her family when she decided to try her luck using the numbers from her fortune cookie. While visiting the Kentucky Lottery website, she also placed a $5 bet on Golden Snake Triple Play.
Moments later, Bailey was stunned to see she had won $50,000. The Kentucky Lottery noted that the odds of hitting that prize on a $5 wager are roughly one in two million.
“Oh my gosh,” Bailey recalled telling her husband. “‘You might want to look at this and see if I’m seeing this right.’ He couldn’t believe it and asked, ‘What have you done now?’”
The win was confirmed by an email from the Kentucky Lottery soon after.
With her husband planning to retire this December, Bailey said the money would help boost their savings. “We’ve already paid off the house, van, and truck, so this will just be a nice addition to what we have,” she shared.
After taxes, she took home about $36,000. “Not bad for a $5 spin,” Bailey quipped as she left the lottery office.
