BEIRUT: Lebanon has submitted a formal complaint against Iran to the United Nations Security Council, marking the first time Beirut has taken such diplomatic action against Tehran at the international body.
According to reports from MTV Lebanon, the complaint accuses Iran of interfering in Lebanonโs sovereign affairs and violating international diplomatic conventions. Lebanese authorities specifically alleged that Tehran breached the Vienna Convention through actions linked to its political and security activities inside Lebanon.
Moreover, the complaint claimed that Iranโs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) became involved in unlawful activities that allegedly contributed to destruction and instability within the country. Lebanese officials argued that such actions undermined national sovereignty and interfered with independent state decision-making processes.
Dispute Emerges Over Diplomatic Status Claims
The Lebanese complaint also challenged Iranโs account regarding the killing of Iranian diplomats in Beirut during previous conflicts. According to the filing, some individuals Tehran described as diplomats were allegedly not officially registered with Lebanese authorities under recognized diplomatic procedures.
Furthermore, Beirut accused Iran of failing to comply with Lebanese government decisions concerning the Iranian ambassador and continuing activities viewed as interference in domestic political matters.
The move signals a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries, whose relations have remained sensitive because of Iranโs longstanding influence in Lebanese political and security affairs.
Regional and Diplomatic Reactions Expected
Meanwhile, political analysts expect the complaint to attract considerable international attention, particularly amid ongoing regional instability and heightened tensions involving Iran and its allies across the Middle East.
Neither Iranian officials nor the United Nations Security Council immediately issued formal responses to the allegations outlined in Lebanonโs complaint. However, observers believe the diplomatic step could deepen divisions within regional politics and intensify debate over foreign influence in Lebanon.
The complaint also reflects growing pressure inside Lebanon regarding sovereignty, governance, and external involvement in domestic affairs.
