Bollywood actor Imran Khan has been directed to leave India by October 28 after participating in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Mumbai.
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issued the notice following a complaint about the actor’s participation in the October 10 demonstration. Khan, who is a US citizen and holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, was briefly detained during the protest.
The demonstration took place at August Kranti Maidan and called for Kumar’s resignation.
Complaint Triggers Immigration Action
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed a complaint alleging that Khan had violated rules governing foreign nationals and OCI cardholders by participating in a political demonstration.
Gamdevi police forwarded the complaint to the FRRO for further action. The immigration authority subsequently directed Khan to leave the country by October 28.
Somaiya argued that authorities should take action against foreign nationals who participate in political protests in India. However, his broader allegations about foreign involvement in protests have not been independently established.
Why the Notice Matters
Khan’s case has drawn attention to the restrictions governing foreign nationals living in India. OCI cardholders receive certain residency and travel privileges, but they remain subject to applicable immigration rules.
India’s Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, provides a legal framework for regulating foreign nationals’ entry and stay. Section 29 allows authorities to order a foreign national’s removal for specified legal violations or security-related reasons.
However, the precise legal grounds cited in Khan’s notice remain unclear in public reporting.
Actor May Challenge the Notice
Reports indicate that Khan plans to challenge the notice before the Bombay High Court. A legal challenge could allow the court to examine the immigration action and the circumstances surrounding the case.
Khan has not publicly responded to requests for comment reported by international media. His case remains a developing legal matter, and the notice does not itself establish the final outcome of any potential challenge.
