KARACHI: A dramatic scene unfolded at a Karachi court on Tuesday when a lawyer slapped Salman Farooqi, a businessman arrested in the high-profile motorcyclist torture case in DHA.
Farooqi, along with a co-accused, was produced before the court by Gizri police. Tensions ran high during the proceedings as a group of lawyers confronted the accused, physically pushing them inside the courtroom.
The situation escalated when one lawyer slapped Farooqi, prompting police to swiftly escort him out of the courtroom to ensure his safety.
Advocate Naeem Qureshi, representing Farooqi, submitted a bail application, arguing that the case — which includes allegations of issuing threats — is bailable. However, the prosecution sought physical remand of the suspects.
While the defense requested a one-day remand, the court approved a two-day physical remand and ordered the police to present a progress report at the next hearing.
The case stems from an incident in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA), where Farooqi allegedly assaulted a young motorcyclist in the presence of his sister. The video of the assault went viral, triggering widespread outrage and demands for accountability.
Farooqi was later booked at Gizri Police Station on charges including criminal intimidation, physical assault, and public humiliation, based on a complaint filed by eyewitness Muhammad Saleem.
