Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Saturday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The meeting marked the first discussions between Russian and German foreign ministers since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Germany requested the meeting. According to the ministry, the two officials discussed bilateral relations and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The ministry added that Wadephul reiterated Berlin’s previously stated positions on the issues discussed.
The talks took place amid heightened tensions between Moscow and Berlin. Germany recently accused Russia of attempting to target two cargo aircraft at Leipzig airport in August using an explosives-laden drone. Moscow has rejected numerous Western accusations concerning its actions.
Speaking at the UN Security Council earlier this week, Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s support for Ukraine. He also called for a ceasefire and negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting peace.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova separately claimed that German officials sought restrictions on media coverage of the meeting. She said journalists were barred from asking questions and recording audio during the opening statements.
Lavrov previously met Germany’s foreign minister in January 2022, when he held talks with then-Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine.
