Judge makes light-hearted ‘commando’ remark after lawyer’s unusual argument in case involving allegations of husband’s torture
ISLAMABAD: An unusual exchange triggered laughter in the Islamabad High Court during the hearing of a bail application filed by a woman accused of torturing her husband, according to a report by 24NewsHD TV Channel.
Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro heard the bail application as lawyer Amna Saeed appeared on behalf of the accused woman and presented arguments seeking relief for her client.
During the proceedings, Saeed argued that even if her client had struck someone in anger, she remained the “lordship of the house.” The unusual choice of words immediately prompted laughter among those present in the courtroom.
The lawyer herself also appeared amused by the argument, adding to the lighter atmosphere during an otherwise serious bail proceeding.
Judge Responds With Light-Hearted Question
Meanwhile, Justice Soomro noticed the reaction across the courtroom and responded with a humorous observation of his own.
“You are laughing yourself and the entire courtroom is also laughing. Is this woman some kind of commando?” the judge asked.
The remark generated further amusement among those attending the hearing. Justice Soomro also smiled during the exchange before the proceedings continued.
However, the case itself concerns allegations of domestic violence, with the woman facing accusations that she subjected her husband to physical torture.
Unusual Argument Changes Courtroom Atmosphere
The exchange stood out because bail proceedings normally focus on the allegations, available evidence and legal grounds for granting or refusing relief.
Nevertheless, the defence lawyer’s description of her client as the household’s “lordship” briefly transformed the atmosphere inside the courtroom.
The judge’s response also highlighted the unusual nature of the argument without detracting from the judicial proceedings.
The report did not provide further details about the alleged torture, the circumstances leading to the case or the final outcome of the woman’s bail application.
