NDMA Issues Flood Alert for Sindh and Balochistan as Cyclone Threatens Coastal Areas

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert for the coastal regions of Sindh and Balochistan due to a cyclone moving westward off the coast of Pakistan. The NDMA expects the cyclone to continue its west-southwest trajectory, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall.

According to the NDMA, wind speeds in areas such as Hyderabad, Jamshoro, and Dadu could reach 60 to 80 kilometers per hour. Heavy rain is anticipated in the Karachi division, as well as in Badin, Thatta, Sajawal, Hyderabad, Matiari, Jamshoro, and Dadu, through tonight. The NDMA also forecasts continued strong winds and heavy rain in Hub, Lasbela, Awaran, Kech, and Gwadar.

In response to these conditions, the NDMA advises avoiding seashores and coastal areas until the situation improves. The authority is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with local officials to manage any risks.

In Punjab, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has predicted rain across most districts in the next 24 hours. While water levels in the Indus, Chenab, Ravi, Jhelum, and Sutlej rivers are currently normal, the Nullah Basantar in Narowal is experiencing a low flood. The PDMA is on high alert, especially in Rajanpur and Dera Ghazi Khan, where hill torrents may pose a threat. The PDMA and local authorities are prepared for any emergencies to ensure resident safety.

Water levels in Mangla Dam and Tarbela Dam are at 74% and 100% capacity, respectively, with Indian dams holding up to 60% capacity, according to the PDMA spokesperson.

In Quetta, recent rains have caused substantial damage, including the destruction of seven houses and damage to an educational institution. The PDMA has been active in rescue operations, saving five individuals from floodwaters in Lasbela.
