Heatwave Grips Karachi: 1,592 Admitted to Jinnah Hospital, 20 Lives Lost

Karachi is reeling under a severe heatwave, with 1,592 individuals admitted to Jinnah Hospital in the past 24 hours due to heat-related illnesses, as reported by the hospital’s emergency ward in-charge, Dr. Nosheen. Tragically, 20 people lost their lives despite treatment, while 29 were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The intense heatwave in Karachi has been exacerbated by the absence of sea breeze, according to meteorological observations. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (MET) has forecasted that these hot weather conditions are expected to persist in the port city until tomorrow.

Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to minimize outdoor activities and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, particularly during peak hours from 10 AM to 4 PM. Monday marked the hottest day of the year so far in Karachi, with temperatures soaring to a record-breaking 42 degrees Celsius across various parts of the city.

Gulistan-e-Johar emerged as the hottest locality, recording a blistering 43.7 degrees Celsius, followed closely by the airport area at 42.8 degrees Celsius, and Shahrah-e-Faisal at 40.5 degrees Celsius. Maripur also experienced scorching temperatures, registering 40.2 degrees Celsius. The citywide average temperature settled at a sweltering 42.6 degrees Celsius, underscoring the severity of the ongoing heatwave.

As Karachiites endure these extreme weather conditions, authorities are emphasizing public safety measures and healthcare readiness to mitigate the impact of the heatwave on the population. Efforts are underway to provide relief and support to affected individuals while urging vigilance and precautionary measures during this challenging period.

The current heatwave in Karachi highlights the urgent need for enhanced public awareness and preparedness strategies to cope with extreme weather events. Climate change projections suggest that such heatwaves may become more frequent and intense in the future, underscoring the importance of sustainable urban planning and adaptation measures.

Authorities and communities must collaborate on implementing heat action plans, improving urban green spaces, and ensuring access to cooling centers and adequate healthcare facilities during heat emergencies. By prioritizing resilience and proactive measures, Karachi can better protect its residents from the health risks associated with prolonged periods of extreme heat.
