The University of Karachi has introduced new guidelines concerning student attire, stressing the importance of maintaining a respectful and modest appearance on campus. The notification, dated January 14, 2025, was issued by Dr. Nosheen Raza, the Students’ Adviser, and outlines the institution’s expectations regarding student dress code.
According to the notice, students must wear clean and modest clothing that reflects respect for the academic environment. The university specifically prohibits attire that is deemed provocative, offensive, or distracting. This includes clothing such as revealing or see-through garments, shorts, sleeveless tops, tight-fitting outfits, and apparel with inappropriate language or graphics. Casual footwear, like flip-flops, is also banned on the university grounds.
The dress code guidelines are applicable to all students while on campus. Dr. Nosheen Raza explained that Karachi University, one of Pakistan’s largest educational institutions with over 45,000 enrolled students, regularly issues notifications on student discipline. She noted that this particular notification was issued due to the arrival of many new students at the start of the academic year, with additional evening admissions still in progress.
The adviser emphasized that the dress code has always been a part of the university’s policy, which encourages students to dress modestly. She clarified that this new notice serves as a reminder for incoming students about the dress code requirements.
The university aims to foster a respectful and professional atmosphere on campus through these guidelines, ensuring that all students are aware of and comply with the established standards.
