The United Kingdom has announced plans to establish 280 skill centers across Pakistan to enhance technical and vocational training, as reported by state media on Saturday. This project, undertaken in partnership with Middle Eastern institutions, aims to prepare Pakistanis for job opportunities in the Gulf region.
Pakistan’s economy has long benefited from remittances sent by its overseas workforce, particularly those working in the Middle East. However, as international job markets become more demanding, training and upskilling Pakistani workers have become key priorities for the government.
Discussions about the skill centers took center stage during a two-day visit by a British delegation, which met with Pakistani officials involved in technical and vocational education. According to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), the delegation stated that the centers would provide training in various sectors. Graduates will receive a joint certification from institutions in Pakistan, the UK, and Gulf countries.
The initiative’s first phase aims to create 80,000 jobs for graduates, primarily in Gulf nations such as Dubai. Employment will be offered in sectors including security, hospitality, construction, veterinary services, nursing, and policing.
Federal Secretary of Education Mohiyuddin Wani and National Vocational and Technical Training Commission Chairperson Gulmina Bilal emphasized the importance of equipping Pakistanis with quality skills for international careers. The British delegation, which includes members of the House of Lords, reaffirmed their commitment to fostering educational cooperation to empower Pakistan’s youth. They are also scheduled to meet with Federal Minister for Education Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui in Karachi.
