ISLAMABAD: A migrant ship, carrying a total of 45 individuals including three children, sank off Italy’s Lampedusa Island today, resulting in the tragic loss of 41 lives.
Rescuers have informed that a migrant ship was transporting 45 people in total, including three children. It tragically sank off Italy’s Lampedusa Island. The devastating incident claimed the lives of 41 individuals.
The vessel had set sail from Sfax in Tunisia and sank within hours during its journey to Italy, as stated by a group of four survivors from the shipwreck.
Reports reveal that the survivors, three men and one woman, originate from the Ivory Coast and Guinea. They reached the island of Lampedusa today.
This year has tragically witnessed a loss of 1,800 lives in attempts to enter Europe from North Africa.
Tunisian authorities emphasize that the port city of Sfax, located about 80 miles (130km) from Lampedusa, plays a crucial role as a significant entry point for migrants aspiring to achieve a better life in Europe.
Survivors informed rescuers that they were aboard a boat carrying 45 individuals, including three children.
The survivors recounted that their vessel set sail from Sfax last Thursday but tragically sank within hours. According to reports, a cargo ship rescued them and then transferred them to an Italian coast guard vessel.
On Sunday, the Italian coast guard documented two shipwrecks; however, it remains unclear whether the survivors’ vessel was involved in either of these incidents.
