Tragedy in Parachinar: Over 100 Children Dead as Road Blockades Hinder Aid

Tragedy in Parachinar

More than 100 children have tragically lost their lives in Parachinar, a district in Kurram Agency, due to a lack of access to medical care caused by ongoing road blockades that have persisted for over two and a half months.

The crisis has plunged the region into despair, leaving residents without essential food and medical supplies.

Protests have erupted as citizens demand urgent action to reopen the roads. Demonstrators have been rallying against the blockade for six consecutive days, highlighting the dire conditions faced by the population.

The prolonged closure of major and minor routes has severely restricted the movement of goods and services, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Agha Muzamil, Chairman of Upper Kurram Tehsil, lamented the devastating toll on the community. “Residents are unable to access basic needs like healthcare and food due to road closures. Over 100 children have succumbed to the lack of medical care,” he said.

In an attempt to address the crisis, Kurram’s Deputy Commissioner announced that a Grand Jirga has been convened to mediate peace talks between warring tribes.

The government is optimistic that these negotiations will bring stability and lead to the reopening of critical access routes.

Solidarity demonstrations have also been organized in major cities, including outside Karachi’s Numaish Chowrangi and Lahore Press Club, by Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen.

These protests aim to draw national attention to the suffering of Parachinar residents and urge swift action from authorities.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister’s Adviser on Information, Barrister Saif, revealed that a special police force has been approved to secure Parachinar Road.

He stressed that the government is committed to achieving a sustainable resolution to the century-old tribal conflict, which has claimed over 100 lives and paralyzed the district.

The situation in Parachinar remains tense, with the prolonged blockade causing untold suffering to its residents. Authorities are under increasing pressure to address the humanitarian crisis and restore normalcy to the beleaguered region.
