BAHAWALPUR: National Food Security and Research Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema expressed reservations about the official inquiry into the Islamia University Bahawalpur scandal. During a press conference at his residence in Bahawalpur, he denied his son Walidad Cheema’s involvement. He accused political opponents of defaming him. He demanded the creation of a high-level fact-checking committee to investigate the issue.
Cheema demanded the formation of a commission consisting of high court judges to investigate the case, which includes compromised videos as part of the scandal. As a senior politician from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), he stated his readiness to participate in any inquiry committee alongside his son. He added that if any wrongdoing is proven, he will personally expel Walidad from his house.
Meanwhile, Punjab caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that the investigation of the university scandal has been completed. He asserted that those responsible will face severe punishment. He also hinted at the possibility of a judicial inquiry if deemed necessary.
Islamia University Bahawalpur scandal
This month, illegal activities involving the sale and use of drugs and prohibited medicines were reported at Islamia University Bahawalpur. In response to the matter, the police arrested the university’s chief security officer, Ijaz Shah, a few days ago. The university’s director of finance, Muhammad Abubakar was also arrested.
After completing the forensic analysis of their mobile phones, a comprehensive report was sent to CM Naqvi. The university’s vice chancellor, Dr. Athar Mehboob, wrote a letter to the provincial police chief, declaring the cases against his colleagues as “false.” He requested a transparent investigation by a committee of senior officers.
Dr. Mehboob maintained in the letter that some individuals who fear the university’s progress are trying to defame it. He assured Punjab’s inspector general that there was no illegal activity within the university.
An internal committee was also formed by the university to investigate the matter. However, both suspects have been suspended delaying the inquiry.
In response to the arrest of its officials, the university announced that it would conduct drug tests for all its employees, including the VC himself, adhering to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) directives and guidelines against drugs on campus. Later, the VC resigned from his post.
