ISLAMABAD: In a significant move to enhance the capacity of Pakistan’s Supreme Court, two retired Supreme Court justices, Sardar Tariq Masood and Mazhar Alam Miankhel, are set to be sworn in as ad hoc judges on Monday. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa will administer the oath at 11 am in the Judges Block Committee Room.
The appointment, approved by President Asif Ali Zardari, follows a formal notification confirming the one-year term for the two esteemed former justices. This decision, executed under Article 182 of the Constitution, aims to increase the court’s efficiency in delivering justice.
Justice Masood, renowned for his expertise in constitutional and civil law, and Justice Miankhel, celebrated for his contributions to criminal law and human rights, both have illustrious careers in the judiciary. Their addition to the Supreme Court is anticipated to bolster its ability to manage an increasing caseload significantly.
The ad hoc appointment of judges is a constitutional mechanism designed to temporarily expand the Supreme Court’s bench, ensuring effective case management. With the inclusion of Justices Masood and Miankhel, the Supreme Court’s strength now stands at 19 judges, comprising 17 permanent and 2 ad hoc judges.
This strategic move reflects the judiciary’s proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by a growing number of cases. The expertise and experience that Justices Masood and Miankhel bring are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the court’s efficiency and effectiveness.
As the Supreme Court continues to navigate complex legal landscapes, the ad hoc appointments underscore the commitment to maintaining judicial integrity and delivering timely justice. The legal community and the public alike will be closely watching the impact of these appointments on the court’s performance in the coming year.
