Suo Moto Notice
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken suo moto notice of independent Senator Faisal Vawda’s critical press conference against Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges. This information was disclosed by sources on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Vawda held a press conference in which he vehemently criticized the IHC judges. He referred to a letter in which the judges alleged that spy agencies were interfering in judicial affairs.
Vawda, addressing this issue, called for an end to the targeting of institutions. “Stop targeting the institutions, enough is enough. If there is any interference by institutions, then provide evidence and we will stand together [against it],” the former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader stated during the press conference.
The sources revealed that a bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa is set to hear the suo motu notice on Friday. This bench will also include Justice Irfan Sadaat and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan.
Vawda’s press conference followed his filing of a request with the IHC registrar, demanding the disclosure of correspondence between the former IHC chief justice Athar Minallah and IHC’s Justice Babar Sattar regarding the latter’s green card status.
This letter from Vawda was in response to a social media campaign that accused Justice Sattar of holding US nationality and having a business interest in a private school in Pakistan.
In his press conference, Vawda stressed the need for transparency and accountability, urging that any alleged interference by institutions in judicial matters be substantiated with evidence. He expressed his readiness to unite with others against such interference if proof were provided.
The Supreme Court’s decision to take suo motu notice reflects the seriousness with which it views Vawda’s allegations and the potential implications for the integrity of judicial institutions.
The upcoming hearing, led by CJP Qazi Faez Isa, will examine the content and context of Vawda’s statements as well as the broader issues raised by his press conference.
This development underscores the ongoing tensions and complexities within Pakistan’s judicial and political landscapes.
The case highlights the challenges faced by judicial institutions in maintaining their independence amidst accusations of external meddling and the broader implications for governance and rule of law in the country.
The intervention of Supreme Court aims to address these concerns and ensure that any allegations of interference are thoroughly investigated and resolved.
