Six villagers died in Dera Ghazi Khan late on Tuesday night when a hill torrent broke through a protection dyke. On Wednesday, families affected by rain in parts of Sindh and Balochistan waited for help from the government or tried to get to safe places on their own.
As more information about the damage caused by the unusual rains and flooding came out, it was found that six more people were missing from the Shadan Lund protection dyke, which had been hit by a flood.
A lot of people were stuck in Lasbela, Balochistan because it was hard for rescuers to get to them. However, 150 people were saved from the Lakhra tehsil.
Villagers who live near the protection dyke say that the government did not warn them about the torrents coming from the Soori Lund hill, so they were caught off guard.
Rescue workers say that torrents from Soori hill broke through in Pul Qamber, Basti Amdani, Chowkiwala, Basti Lashari, and Chitani Zindapir Morr.
The government sent out 14 boats to help save the people. The bodies of Amina, who was 40, Khalil, who was 50, Parveen Bibi, Rasheeda, Naseem, and Muneer’s 3-year-old son were found.
After the Wadoor hill floods hit Kumharwala and Khosa, two boats were used to help save people in Kot Chhuta tehsil. 46 villagers were moved by rescue teams.
Heavy rains continued to cause problems in the Lasbela district, where many people were stuck in different places, and rescue teams had a hard time getting to them because flooding had submerged a large area.
Even though 72 hours had passed, the road between Quetta and Karachi could not be fixed because three bridges and a large part of the National Highway had been washed away.
But PDMA rescue teams and Edhi volunteers used boats to get to the Oraki in Lakhra tehsil and save about 150 people who were stuck in different villages. “An Edhi boat moved about 30 families to a safe place,” Kalat Commissioner Daud Khilji told Dawn.
Other officials said that there were still about 200 people stuck in the Oraki area. Two Navy helicopters dropped food and water and other aid supplies in some areas.
From the Jhal Magsi district, we heard that water from the Mula River flooded around 10 villages in the Fatehpur area, putting a lot of people out of their homes.
Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo, the Chief Minister of Balochistan, gave the PDMA his official helicopter so that it could be used for relief work. Flood-damaged areas in Jhal Magsi and Gandawah were dropped with 1,340 kg of food and other supplies. Wednesday night, it rained a lot in Quetta, the capital of the province. Many places were flooded.
