Sick Passenger Forces Dhaka-Bound Flight to Make Emergency Landing in Karachi

Emergency Landing

KARACHI: On Monday, a Dhaka-bound flight made an emergency landing at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi after a passenger’s health deteriorated.

The passenger, a 42-year-old Bangladeshi man, was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival. The incident occurred on a flight traveling from Sharjah to Dhaka, operated by a foreign airline.

According to a spokesperson from the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), the flight requested and was granted permission for an emergency landing due to the worsening condition of the passenger.

Medical personnel on site examined the individual and confirmed the passenger’s death. After the necessary medico-legal procedures were completed, the body was handed over to the airline. The flight subsequently continued its journey to Dhaka after 6 a.m., carrying the deceased passenger.

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) reported that flight G-9512, which had originated in Sharjah and was en route to Dhaka, landed in Karachi with permission from the Karachi air traffic control (ATC).

The PCAA spokesperson confirmed that the body was processed according to legal requirements before the plane resumed its voyage to Bangladesh.

This situation is reminiscent of a similar event that occurred on February 20. On that occasion, a Saudia Airlines flight bound for Riyadh from Dhaka also made an emergency landing in Karachi due to a passenger’s medical emergency.

The flight, Saudia SV 805, had departed from Dhaka at 3:57 a.m. and was flying over Indian airspace when a 44-year-old Bangladeshi passenger began to suffer severe health complications.

The passenger, identified as Abu Tahir, experienced a significant decline in health, including severe vomiting and high blood pressure.

The pilot of the Saudia Airlines flight requested permission for an emergency landing in Mumbai, but the Indian air traffic control (ATC) denied the request, citing concerns about the passenger’s nationality and other details.

Faced with the refusal from Mumbai ATC, the pilot sought alternative landing permissions from Karachi ATC. The request was granted, and the aircraft was rerouted to Karachi, where it landed at 7:28 a.m.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan (CAA) had a medical team on standby, and doctors attended to the ailing passenger immediately upon the plane’s arrival.

Despite the emergency medical intervention, the passenger’s condition did not improve significantly, but the plane was cleared to continue its journey to Riyadh after the emergency procedures were completed.

These incidents highlight the critical nature of medical emergencies on flights and the importance of having robust procedures in place to handle such situations effectively.

They also underscore the challenges faced by airlines and air traffic controllers in managing emergency situations that cross international borders.
