Senator Sherry Rehman’s office has dismissed allegations of misusing US funds received by the Jinnah Institute (JI), calling it an “ongoing troll campaign.” The controversy began after Richard Grenell, a former US diplomat and advisor to President-elect Donald Trump, accused Rehman of receiving nearly $500,000 from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
Grenell took to X (formerly Twitter), claiming, “What a waste of US taxpayer money. Sherry has been exposed.” In response, Rehman’s office categorically denied the allegations via a series of posts, clarifying that no impropriety occurred.
The statement highlighted Jinnah Institute’s transparent financial practices, including audited accounts and due diligence. It emphasized that nothing had been hidden or “exposed,” asserting that Rehman had never drawn a salary from the think tank.
The office also underlined Rehman’s distinguished career as a journalist, diplomat, and parliamentarian, where she consistently advocated for democratic values and transparency. Furthermore, the Jinnah Institute was described as a leading organization committed to promoting democracy, regional stability, and progressive policies in Pakistan.
Grenell’s accusations coincided with his recent support for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, which the PTI welcomed. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) reiterated the need to uphold Pakistan’s sovereignty amidst these developments.
