Karsaz Accident Suspect
KARACHI: On Saturday, a sessions court granted permission for the police to interrogate Natasha Danish, the suspect in the Karsaz accident, while she is in prison, in connection with a new drug-related case.
Natasha Danish had been arrested and is currently held on judicial remand in a women’s prison following a tragic incident on August 19, where her SUV collided with and killed 60-year-old Imran Arif and his 22-year-old daughter, Amna, near Karsaz.
The decision came after Sub-Inspector Shakir Rind, the investigating officer for the case, submitted an application to the judicial magistrate seeking approval to question Natasha Danish about allegations of drug use.
The request was related to a new FIR filed under Section 11 of the Prohibition (Enforcement of Hadd) Order, 1979, which pertains to cases involving illegal substance use.
Judicial Magistrate Javed Ali Korejo reviewed the application and noted that Dr. Zainab Irshad, the medico-legal officer, had issued a final medico-legal certificate (MLC).
The certificate confirmed that Natasha Danish was under the influence of methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘ice,’ at the time of the accident. This finding led to the filing of a new FIR at the Bahadurabad police station.
Given that the drug use constitutes a cognizable offense, the investigating officer was authorized to arrest and interrogate the suspect, who is already in judicial custody.
In response to the court’s order, the Senior Superintendent of Central Women Prison has been instructed to facilitate the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Muhammad Shakir Rind, in carrying out the interrogation of Natasha Danish within the prison premises.
This measure ensures that the legal process can continue smoothly while adhering to the required legal formalities.
Earlier in the day, the police had registered the new FIR based on the findings of the chemical analysis report, which confirmed the presence of methamphetamine in Natasha Danish’s system.
Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed confirmed to Dawn that the chemical analysis was positive for methamphetamine, reinforcing the basis for the new charges.
The ongoing investigation aims to address both the traffic accident and the drug-related allegations against Natasha Danish.
