Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a prominent figure in the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), announced his resignation from the Senate Standing Committee on Education on Thursday. His departure from the committee comes after an incident during a recent hearing where Senator Siddiqui was interrupted by Senator Bushra Anjum Butt, the committee’s chairperson.
Instead of allowing Siddiqui to continue, the chairperson directed the committee’s secretary to speak, leading to protests from senators Fauzia Arshad of the PTI and Khalida Ateeb of the MQM. They demanded an apology for the disruption.
In response to the incident, Senator Bushra Anjum Butt issued an apology, which Irfan Siddiqui accepted. Nevertheless, Siddiqui chose to step down from his position on the education committee. Following his resignation, the PML-N appointed Senator Raahat Jamali to fill Siddiqui’s spot on the committee. Siddiqui will now take on a new role as a member of the National Health Committee.
Siddiqui’s resignation was formally submitted after a meeting with Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. An official notification has been issued to confirm the acceptance of his resignation. This move signifies a shift in his focus from education to health, reflecting the ongoing dynamics within the Senate.
