Jail administration to review staff security, bans WhatsApp; Khan in Attock jail post-graft conviction
ISLAMABAD: Following an alleged “coded conversation” between a jail official and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, the administration of Attock Jail has opted to perform a security audit of all its staff members.
According to the sources, the administration is struggling to understand certain words from the recording of the jail official’s conversation with Khan.
The authorities will send the complete biodata of more than 150 prison staff in Attock jail to the Special Branch and other institutions for security clearance.
They have also issued orders to immediately compile reports on the employees posted in Attock jail. These reports will focus on their affiliation with any extremist organization and other activities, including political party affiliation, as part of the security clearance process.
According to the sources, the authorities have prohibited jail staff’s use of WhatsApp following the implementation of geofencing.
The jail, constructed in 1906, typically holds over 1,000 prisoners. However, at present, it accommodates more than 700 inmates who are provided with only C-class facilities.
Furthermore, the sources disclosed that authorities are actively considering a security-driven proposal to relocate over 100 prisoners to Adiala and other jails.
After a court in Islamabad convicted him in the Toshakhana case, Khan received a three-year prison sentence and was subsequently taken into custody.
uring his meeting with his lawyer, the PTI chairman expressed his concerns about the prison conditions. He mentioned that flies were dominating his cell during the day, and he was dealing with insects at night.
Additionally, the party has taken steps to request his transfer to Adiala jail and the provision of A-Class facilities through an application to the Islamabad High Court.
