Terrorism
PESHAWAR: As the upcoming general elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Islamabad, and Karachi approach, approximately 175 Frontier Constabulary (FC) platoons will be deployed to support the police in ensuring security, particularly in terrorism-affected areas. FC Commandant Moazzam Jah Ansari stated that 125 platoons will be provided to KP, 40 to Islamabad, and 10 to Karachi for maintaining security during the elections.
Given the volatile security situation, the KP Police is gearing up by arranging an additional 34,000 personnel to bolster security measures during the polls on February 8. The province has witnessed a series of terror-related incidents, prompting the need for extensive security arrangements.
A senior official from KP Police emphasized the necessity of around 34,000 additional personnel and revealed plans to engage manpower from various departments to meet the demand. In addition to FC support, this multi-faceted approach aims to ensure comprehensive security coverage.
Recent security upgrades have been implemented for political leaders who received threat alerts, with the KP Police taking adequate measures to protect them and their gatherings. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) sought enhanced security measures for its leadership during the election campaign and approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and other relevant forums to address security concerns.
This move follows the apprehension of two alleged bombers by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), who were reportedly planning attacks on JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and the provincial president of the Awami National Party (ANP) Aimal Wali Khan.
The deteriorating law and order situation in various parts of KP, especially in southern districts, has raised concerns due to increased attacks on police, security forces, civilians, and political figures in recent years. While efforts are being made to improve the situation in the southern districts, the overall security landscape remains a focal point for election preparedness.
