SCO Summit Security: Army Deployment Approved by Government

SCO Summit

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has officially notified the deployment of the Pakistan Army to ensure robust security during the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, scheduled for October 15 and 16 in Islamabad.

This decision has been made to facilitate a safe and secure environment for the delegates and dignitaries attending the summit.

The notification for the deployment cites Article 245 of the Constitution, which allows for the armed forces to assist civil authorities in maintaining law and order.

As part of the security arrangements, army personnel will remain deployed until October 17, ensuring that any potential security concerns are adequately addressed before and after the summit.

Significantly, the SCO Summit will see the participation of several key leaders and officials, including Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.

According to reports from Indian media, Dr. Jaishankar is set to lead a delegation to Pakistan for the summit, marking a noteworthy moment in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

This visit will be particularly historic, as Dr. Jaishankar will be the first Indian foreign minister to visit Pakistan in nearly nine years, with the last visit being by Sushma Swaraj in December 2015.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed in a press briefing on Friday that the Indian delegation’s participation would further strengthen ties and promote dialogue within the SCO framework.

The summit itself is an important platform for cooperation among member states on issues ranging from security to economic collaboration.

In a related diplomatic gesture, Pakistan has officially extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the SCO summit.

This invitation signifies Pakistan’s willingness to engage constructively with its neighbor, despite the historical tensions that have often characterized their bilateral relationship.

The participation of high-level officials from both countries at the SCO Summit is expected to pave the way for discussions on various mutual interests and regional stability.

With the deployment of the army and the anticipated attendance of prominent figures, the SCO Summit in Islamabad is poised to be a significant event, drawing international attention to the evolving dynamics within the region and the cooperative efforts of member nations.
