ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has announced the resumption of train services in Balochistan, marking a significant step towards restoring connectivity in the region.
Speaking at a press conference in Quetta, Abbasi confirmed that the Jaffar Express will resume operations, departing from Peshawar to Quetta on Thursday at 7:30 AM, and making the return journey from Quetta to Peshawar on Friday. So far, 40 passengers have booked tickets for the initial departure.
Special Eid Train & Recruitment Drive
Abbasi also revealed plans for a special Eid train to accommodate increased travel demand during the festive season. Additionally, as part of the first phase of railway reforms, 500 new railway personnel will be recruited to strengthen operations.
Condemnation of Jaffar Express Attack
Addressing the recent terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express, Abbasi strongly condemned the incident, vowing to pursue and eliminate those responsible, even beyond the country’s borders. He acknowledged international condemnation of the attack and confirmed that local elements had played a role in facilitating it.
He emphasized that innocent civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, were targeted, but swift action by security forces prevented further casualties. Dismissing ethnic and provincial divides, he stressed that the enemy’s plans to destabilize the region would not succeed.
Train Operations Extended to Seven Days a Week
Abbasi announced that, unlike the previous two-day service, train operations in Balochistan would now run seven days a week.
During his visit, the minister inspected the damaged Jaffar Express and was briefed by the Divisional Superintendent of Railways on restoration efforts. Train services had remained suspended for 15 days following the March 11 attack.
